New Media Academy
Description
Join #MolloyNewMedia from February 20-22 (9am-3pm) to learn about memes, digital video storytelling and locative mapping. Our academy will teach you why memes are an academic study and their importance in your everyday life. Additionally, you will upgrade your skills and learn essential web languages to make a locative mapping project that includes your vlogs and digital media.
This is a production based academy focusing on the following: Memes, Vlogs and YouTubers, Locative Maps (see our project in the Boyne Valley, Ireland), and basic coding in HTML, CSS, and GeoJSON.
Eligibility: Students must currently be a high school junior or senior. No prior experience is necessary to participate in Molloy's New Media Academy.
Registration Fee: $50
Space is limited. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tuesday:
Welcome and discussion of internet culture and the mapping project.
What is/are New Media? How and why do we define it?
Memes in digital culture vs memes in real life (IRL).
Practice with mapping gear (GPS, GoPro, Cameras, GoogleMaps) and introduction to map and code.
Wednesday:
Digital Literacies and algorithms - how we talk about digital media and digital languages.
Vlogging and becoming a YouTuber - new techniques and online culture.
Learning more locative storytelling and Spatial Humanities Guest speakers!
Adding map points and digital production.
Hacktivism vs Hashtag Activism - what locative narratives mean.
Thursday:
Production morning - map building and perfecting Coding and pinpoint placements.
Customization and icons.
Embed videos and and contextual storytelling.
Summary and presentation of map.
No, students will receive a catered lunch each day in our Reception Room.
