Math Screening Exam- FRESHMAN ONLY
Description
Freshman Only Math Screening Exam Dates will be posted during the Spring Semester.
THESE EXAM DATES ARE FOR INCOMING FRESHMAN NURSING STUDENTS ONLY. TRANSFER STUDENTS, PLEASE GO TO www.molloy.edu/mathscreening
A proficiency in basic mathematics is needed in pursuing your coursework and career in the nursing field. Therefore, all accepted nursing students are required to take a math screening test before registering to determine if there is a need for remediation.
You are asked to come to the lobby of the Wilbur Arts Center 15 minutes before the time of testing with a number 2 pencil. No one will be allowed late entry into the testing room. The exam is timed and lasts approximately 60 minutes. Please be reminded that while the test must be taken prior to your registering, it does not affect your admission to the college. The purpose is to determine your knowledge in basic mathematics needed to calculate medications accurately.
The test will consist of 20 questions that will incorporate these basic mathematical skills:
- Division, multiplication, subtraction and addition of decimals
- Division, multiplication, subtraction and addition of fractions
- Conversion of fractions to decimals
- Conversion of percentages to decimals and fractions
- Solving for X
- Ration and proportion
- Word problems
Calculators may not be used.
Criteria for success: A grade of 90 percent (18 correct answers) is required.
Outcome of the test: Students who do not achieve the grade of 90 percent will be required to take a non-credit course, MAT 060, prior to entering any Freshman Nursing Courses. (Nur 129 and 139). Students will be required to show evidence of having passed the Math Screening Test or MAT 060 on the first day of class.
The faculty of the nursing department would like you to succeed in your nursing studies. We encourage you to practice your math skills prior to your taking the math screening examination.
